They’re also close to major Gainesville locales, including Santa Fe College, North Florida Regional Medical Center and two of the region’s main shopping centers.This neighborhood may be located on the western edge of Gainesville’s border, but its proximity to Interstate 75 makes it convenient to a variety of the city’s most popular sites. It’s just a 15-minute drive to the University of Florida campus, 10 minutes to the Nationwide Insurance call center, 20 minutes west of Gainesville Regional Airport and 20 minutes north of Paynes Prairie Preserve.

The neighborhood around The Oaks Mall is as convenient for car-less residents as it is for those with private vehicles. Parking is more plentiful and easier to find here than in neighborhoods near UF. I-75 and other major area highways cut through and around the neighborhood for simple regional and town travel. State Road 26, for instance, runs through the neighborhood leading west to other Florida towns, including Newberry, Trenton and Fanning Springs. Heading east, it connects with SW 35th Street/State Road 121 and SW 13th/US 441 for easy north-south drives through the region.

If you don’t have a car in town, this area is also very livable, thanks to the city’s extensive local transit system. Many of Gainesville’s bus routes are concentrated around the university campus, but several routes serve The Oaks Mall area. Route 5 links the mall to downtown, Route 20 heads to the university, and Route 75 transports you to Butler Plaza. If you’re heading to Santa Fe College, you can take a short ride on a Route 23 bus. From nearby Santa Fe College, you can also hop on a Route 39 bus to reach the regional airport or a Route 43 bus to reach Shands Hospital. Several bus stops are located around the neighborhood so you don’t have to walk to the mall itself to access local public transit.

Of course, the area’s main claim to fame is its proximity to the mall and Town Center Shopping Center. The mall boasts more than 100 stores, restaurants and services, from Dillards and Macys to Charlotte Russe and GameStop. A number of nationally known restaurants surround the mall, including BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse and Boston Market. Bed Bath & Beyond, Toys R Us, Office Depot and Gators 4 Cinema are next to the mall. Don’t shop ‘til you drop yet, though, because Town Center shopping is just across I-75, offering stores such as Bealls Outlet, TJ Maxx and David’s Bridal.
