Southwest Villas provides an excellent location with many transportation options for University of Florida students. The complex is just minutes away from campus by car or bus, but a walk will require 30 minutes or more depending on the route chosen and the volume of traffic. Those who prefer to bike can expect to reach the campus in approximately 20 minutes over mostly flat terrain with nice bike lanes.
Most residents of this complex prefer to use bus transportation provided by the Gainesville Regional Transit System. There are four bus routes which serve the complex. These routes are 20, 28, 34, and 36. One of the most convenient routes is 20 which travels from the Reitz Student Union to Oaks Mall every 7-30 minutes during the weekdays. On the weekends the buses run every 20-60 minutes. Bus is by far the most convenient way to reach the UF campus.
Some residents choose to use their own vehicles and park in one of the commuter lots on campus. This can take approximately 20 minutes. Many find that it is actually quicker to take the bus because finding a parking spot can sometimes present difficulties.
Southwest Villas is located very near SW 34th Street and many restaurants, retail outlets, and grocery stores. There are also coffee shops nearby where students like to gather. These include the popular Hookah Nite Cafe which is just one-half mile from the complex. Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks can also be found less than a mile away.
Grocery shopping is convenient with a Winn Dixie, Dollar Tree, and WalMart all located within walking distance. Those looking for restaurants will find six different restaurants within three blocks. These include a California Chicken Grill, Gumby’s Pizza, and Court of Hero’s.
Bars and nightclubs require a short drive of two miles or less. Some of the most popular are the Stonewood Grill & Tavern, Salty Dog Saloon, and Balls. Many of these nightclubs offer live entertainment by local and regional musical acts. Leisure activities in the area include the Regal Cinemas Gainesville Cinema 14 which is just one-half mile away.
