For students and staff at the University of Florida who want a small, quiet community that’s not too far from campus, McCoy Apartments are an excellent option. These two-bedroom townhomes feature private patios, washer/dryer hookups, and large floorplans perfect for roommates, couples, and small families. With all utilities included in the rent, close proximity to several bus stops, and shopping locations nearby, this is also a convenient and economical place to call home.
McCoy Apartments is located just off of NE Main Street and NE 23rd Street, so it’s just over two miles from the northeast corner of campus. While it is too far to walk, students can ride a bike and be at class in 20 minutes while driving only takes 10 to 15 minutes to reach the northeast side of campus, near Library West, Tigert Hall, and the College of Business. The south side of campus houses the science buildings, including the College of Nursing, Veterinary Science, and the College of Medicine, and the commute is around 25 minutes by bike and 15 to 20 minutes by car.
To reach campus, either by bike or car, the most direct path is to go south on Main Street, and then make a right to go west on University Avenue which borders the north side of campus. Students and staff can either turn left onto SW 13th Street which borders the campus to the east and enters campus via the many side streets that go through campus, including Stadium Road and Museum Road.
When students and staff aren’t in class or at home hitting the books, there are plenty of great things to do in Gainesville. For necessities, there is a large shopping center just a few blocks away on NE Main Street that offers a Publix Grocery store. Near campus, there are popular hangout spots, pubs, restaurants, and coffee shops along University Avenue.
Butler Plaza offers some great shopping and dining options, including Target, Old Navy, and Best Buy plus there’s a large movie theater. It’s located on SW Archer Road and SW 34th Street, about 20 minutes by car and accessible by taking 13th Street to Archer Road. The Oaks Mall is a large, lovely mall with some great shops and restaurants in and around the area. It’s about 20 minutes by car taking NW 8th Avenue to Newberry Road.
For students and staff who want to utilize Gainesville’s popular transit system, there are stops on the #15 and #27 bus routes within a block of the community that covers the northern parts of Gainesville. Both go to the Rosa Parks Transfer station, allowing students to easily reach destinations around Gainesville, including campus, Butler Plaza, and The Oaks Mall.
