Midtown UF Scene

Midtown lies along bustling University Avenue, just across the street from University of Florida’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, the O’Connell Center and Plaza of the Americas. The stadium is a social and sports hot spot in the fall when Gator fans converge to cheer on the home football team. You’ll find an endless array of theatrical productions, interesting talks, concerts and events at the O’Connell Center and a variety of quick-service food options in the campus’ Reitz Union. If you’re on campus on a Friday night, check out the lively Gator Nights activities, featuring free entertainment, movies, activities and food for students.

Midtown Restaurants & Bars

On the Midtown side of University Avenue, the bar, restaurant and nightlife scene is popular. You haven’t truly experienced Gainesville if you haven’t spent at least one evening bar or restaurant hopping along University Avenue. Many of these bars and restaurants cater to the university crowd, so you’ll find plenty of cheap nibbles, drinks and entertainment. Some popular bars and restaurants in the neighborhood include The Swamp, Rowdy’s, Salty Dog Saloon, 101 Cantina, Relish, Fat Daddy’s, Gator City and Balls. Live music and dancing are abundant at a few 18+ joints and nightclubs, including Grog House, Envy and XS.

Living in Midtown also puts you close to a number of quick-service and fast-food restaurants. The variety and abundance mean you can avoid making dinner several nights a week and not repeat your choice. Chipotle, Mochi, Pita Pit, Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts are all just steps away from home when you live in Midtown.

Getting Around Midtown and Beyond

Just about everything you need is within walking distance of Midtown apartments and homes. Supermarkets may be the exceptions as they are a little removed from the neighborhood.

As you’re planning how you’ll get around town in Gainesville, keep in mind that parking in the Midtown apartment neighborhood is extremely tight. If you have a car, be sure to check if your cheap Midtown apartment includes on-site parking availability. If no on-site parking is provided, you’ll need a city on-street parking permit for the year. These permits currently cost $105, so it can be pricey to keep a car when you live in Midtown.

Many bus routes pick up and drop off passengers at several points along University Avenue. This easy availability of public transportation makes it relatively simple to live, shop and enjoy life in Gainesville, even if you don’t have access to a car. Many bus routes offer transportation to far points on campus, The Oaks Mall, downtown Gainesville, the airport, medical care and dozens of other shopping centers, businesses and entertainment venues. Without your own private vehicle, grocery shopping is easiest using the local bus system.

Recreation

Since you’re across the street from the university, you have countless recreation options within steps of your home. In addition to the many sport and recreation venues found in the heart of UF’s campus, Mark Bostick Golf Course and Loblolly Woods Nature Park are about 1.5 miles from the neighborhood. They, too, are conveniently located just off University Avenue. Lake Alice, Depot Park and Sweetwater Wetlands Park are just a few miles south of Midtown.
